Dodson Associates co-authored Dealing with Change in the Connecticut River Valley: A Design Manual for Conservation and Development, an award-winning book that has sold over 20,000 copies throughout North America and overseas, together with Robert Yaro and Randall Arendt. The Design Manual takes an approach based on specific landscape types and development scenarios found in the Connecticut River Valley. It proposes an environmental design approach to development in sensitive rural landscapes based on historic traditions, ecological factors and landscape architectural techniques. Dodson Associates was responsible for concept development, site selection, physical planning and design techniques, illustration, graphic design and writing of significant portions of the manual. Dodson Associates has implemented the planning and design principles developed for the manual in dozens of actual projects.

Open space development saves farmland and forests while creating attractive, walkable communities.

Existing village centers can be infilled with new development sited and designed to fit in with traditional patterns.

Mixed use development in hamlets as an alternative to strip commercial sprawl.
