New York City's drinking water supply is threatened by encroaching sprawl using individual septic systems.

Dodson Associates, in collaboration with planners Robert Yaro, Joel Russell and Phil Herr, developed detailed plans for four communities located within New York City's sensitive upstate water supply reservoirs. Working closely with local officials and citizens, as well as New York City Department of Environmental Protection staff, the consultant team proposed practical solutions to conflicts between local property rights and New York City's public health concerns. Dodson Associates recommended site-specific land use patterns, natural sewage treatment technologies and site engineering techniques that enhance preservation of open space while preserving threatened drinking water resources. The project was featured as the cover story in the June, 1997 issue of Landscape Architecture. |
