Plan for the revitalization of the Trinity River as it flows through a former industrial area of downtown Fort Worth, Texas. Creation of a new downtown mixed use neighborhood, new canal and lake system, flood control measures, pedestrian enhancements and establishment of new parks and tree-lined boulevards. Dodson Associates worked with Bing Thom Architects, Gideon Toal and CDM to develop recommendations for treatment of the water’s edge, establishment of urban wetlands and wildlife habitat, pedestrian amenities, parks, low impact development techniques and natural systems for stormwater management and water purification. A proposed diversion channel will create a flood-free water system of canals and lakes surrounded by new, mixed use urban neighborhoods, traditional streets, pedestrian waterfronts and marinas. Extensive street tree plantings will help reduce the urban heat island effect. Urban design features include dense mid to highrise neighborhoods arranged around a traditional grid of streets and waterfronts. The project has received state and federal funding assistance and is expected to begin construction in 2007.
