Dodson Associates' proposal for a "Sapphire Necklace" for Boston Harbor won an award in this national design competition. The Sapphire Necklace proposal, developed with planner Robert Yaro, environmental engineer Robert Gearhart and civil engineers from Daylor Consulting Group, called for the creation of new marshland, wildlife habitat and recreational areas in Boston Harbor using fill created by the Central Artery Depression and Third Harbor Tunnel projects. An extension of Olmsted's Emerald Necklace, the proposal would revitalize decaying industrial waterfronts and restore wetlands and wildlife habitats lost to harbor development over the past 350 years. Elements of this proposal are currently being implemented on Spectacle Island.
