Virginia Coast Reserve Location: Virginia Coast Reserve, Nassawadox, Virginia Date Completed: 1990 Client: The Nature Conservancy (TNC)
Concerned about increasing development surrounding its 35,000 acre Virginia Coast Reserve, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) hired Dodson Associates and an affiliated firm, LandEthics, to develop site planning principles to guide future development in the region to reduce impacts on fragile coastal ecosystems. Because the site has been designated a World Biosphere Reserve, the plan emphasizes protection of the environmentally sensitive core with controlled development occurring in the surrounding buffer zones. Working with TNC, a local citizens group and county planners, LandEthics is developing recommended modifications to local landuse regulations reflecting the site planning principles developed during the study.
